I have many different low-end ARM microcontrollers with 8K / 16K flash / 32K flash, so IAR is perfect for these chips. YES for Hobbyist Project and microcontroller with a "flash size" below the IAR "size limit" for their limited version, which is 32K for ARM Cortex-M3/M4/M7 or 16K for ARM Cortex-M0/M0+.
In these situations, it doesn't matter what cheap shit you prefer, but instead you must pick something that meets mandatory industry standards for use in automotice / medical / military world, such as: MISRA requirements, "safety compliance" requirements. YES for Work Projects that have Manadatory Industry Requirements. I was very happy with the experience and their paid support, and their tools were easy to install and everything worked cleanly from compiling to debugging. I used IAR at an employer who had money for expensive tools in those days. To compile and debug ARM programs in those days with free tools was a complete cluster fuck. If you go back 10+ years ago, then IAR was way easier to use than free shit in those days. BTW keil sucks too mostly for these reasons
I expect a product that costs this much to at least spot this and throw some warnings. They had no clue where it was going wrong but it was something wrong with the default linker config from the silicon manufacturer. Also I had an issue recently where it wasn't initializing my globals to the correct values. Build errors are reported with vague amounts of detail. Code completion won't work, going to definitions of functions and variables works only if the IDE has been kept open for a long time. None of the features work or even if they do its only sometimes. A couple of emails later they will tell you that the development team is investigating this issue and you'll never hear from them again. They will mostly tell you that whatever went wrong with the product isn't supposed to happen. I can guarantee you that their support team although usually responds on time, their answers are pretty much useless.
People will talk about the tech support and what not.
